Surzmin reviews: The sarzemin starring Ibrahim Ali Khan, Kajol and Prithviraj Sukumaran was released on July 25 at Jio Hotstar. Directed by Kayoz Irani, the film is a patriotic thriller who promises large twists and an emotional drama. The first film, Serzmin, directed by Boman Irani’s son Kayoz Irani, is an ambitious attempt that tells a deep but slightly unbalanced story of war, family and mystery. The film is based on a tense border between India and Pakistan, but its real focus is on the relationship between a soldier and his family. An emotional center that had great possibilities, but the execution of the story failed to take full advantage of it.
Story of Sarzmin film: What is the story?
The sarzmin begins with Major Vijay Menon (Prithviraj Sukumaran), who has become a hero after his successful campaign in the army. His dedication to the service of the country is unmatched, but his feelings towards their family are blurred. Vijay’s wife Meher (Kajol) and his younger son Harman try to get into this new environment. In a ceremony, when Meher asks her son to speak, he stutters and becomes silent after speaking a few words. This scene bothers Vijay, and this is where the restlessness starts in the house. Meanwhile, terrorists from across the border create a tough election in front of Vijay – either save your son or stop a big threat to the country. Like a true soldier, Vijay first keeps the country and loses his son. This is where the story becomes more serious. Both the sacrifice given in the name of duty and its family values appear in the story.
Emotional tug of Prithviraj and Kajol
Eight years later, the story again takes a new twist. During a relief campaign, Vijay meets his lost son, who has now grown. Youth Harman is played by Ibrahim Ali Khan, who is making his debut in Bollywood with this film. Initially this reunion seems pleasant, but gradually Vijay’s mind starts doubting whether it is the same child he had lost. It is from here that the film turns to mystery. Harman’s behavior, his memories and body language bothers Vijay. On the other hand, a sub-story also emerges in which a mysterious person from across the border is helping the Indian Army. The film runs on both these tracks, one family drama and the other one detective thriller, but both find it a little difficult to add.
Kajol is the life of this film
Kajol is the life of this film. As a mother who tries to connect her broken family, her acting is balanced and impressive in every scene. Pain, fear and hope on his face gives emotional depth to the film. Prithviraj Sukumaran, who has previously appeared in such serious roles, seems a bit defined here. Their internal conflict, regretting as a father and proud as a soldier, could have been even more effective if they were given a little more expansion in the screenplay.
Did Ibrahim Ali Khan perform better than the nadis?
On release earlier this year, Ibrahim’s first acting was very criticized in Nadaniyan. Was his performance better this time? An audience watching the film did not think: “Prithviraj and Kajol’s performance is good. Ibrahim Ali Khan seems mismatched, his facial gestures are emotionless. The scenes of Kashmir are beautiful. A well-known story with interesting climax. A well-known story. The film has emotions and patriotic, but weakened writing does not feel less than average!” Another audience reviewed, “Surizhemin is even a weaker thriller than an average. It could have been even more exciting and entertaining.”
Weak script does not live up to expectations
Many people also told that the script of the film is weak. “The base of the sarzmin was solid, but she did not live up to the expectations. The weak screenplay and the direction weakened it. Prithvi, Kajol and the rest of the actors acted well, but there was no special emotional engagement. Overall, it is an average film that has no special moments,” wrote in a viewer’s review, which was disappointed after watching the film.
Another review said, “Surizhemin is a film above an average, especially @itskajold @PrithvioFFICIAL and an honest #ibrahimalikhan.
What was successful in the sarzmin (and what not)
Sarzmin is a film based on a strong concept: a soldier who sacrifices his child for the country, and then tries to live with that decision. But writing does not fully mature this idea. Some sub-stems, such as Vijay’s relationship with his father or the role of a person from across the border, seems incomplete. The biggest drawback is that the audience is unable to feel the depth at the emotional level that this story asks for. The secret of the story could have been interesting if the clues and stress would have been woven better.
Final decision: Should you look at the Sarzmin OTT?
Sarzmin is a film that tries to say something new. It focuses on the personal life of soldiers, moving away from war -based stories. This is an adventure effort, which is innovative. The film has some impressive view, good acting (especially Kajol) and a subject full of possibilities, but nothing of these things turn into a solid, entertaining experience. The loose grip of the script, lack of emotional depth and incomplete use of suspense makes this film average. The sarzmin is once worth watching, especially for those who like family drama and patriotism.
