In the case of a knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, the police have opposed the bail of accused Mohammad Shariful Islam. Police told the court that they had concrete evidence, in which the knife used in the attack and the pieces of knife recovered from the accused are the same. The police also argued that the accused is an illegal Bangladeshi citizen and is in danger of his absconding, which should not give bail.
The Mumbai Police has opposed the bail petition of Bangladeshi citizen Mohammad Shariful Islam, who allegedly attacked Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan with a knife at his Mumbai residence in January this year. The police claimed that they had concrete evidence against the accused and hence they appealed to the court not to bail him. The police told the court that the knife used in the attack and the pieces of knife recovered from the accused were the same.

Citing the report of the forensic science laboratory, the police reiterated their earlier claim before the session court that a piece of knife near the actor’s spine and a piece of knife found at the crime site had matched with a weapon recovered from the accused Sharif-ul-Islam. On Thursday, the police said in a written reply to the petition of the accused in the court that these three pieces were of the same knife that was used to attack the actor.
Khan was attacked by a thief with a knife during an attempt to steal in his 12th floor in Bandra on 16 January. The actor (54 -year -old) underwent surgery at Lilavati Hospital to remove a piece of knife trapped near his spine during the attack. He was discharged from a private hospital five days later. Bangladeshi citizen Islam was arrested two days later on charges of attacking Khan with a knife.

The police said in their reply that the accused is a Bangladeshi citizen who is living illegally in India. If he gets bail, it is likely that he escapes from India and does not appear in court during the trial. The police argued that the crime committed by the accused is of very serious nature and there is strong evidence against him. In his bail plea filed through advocate Vipul Dushing, the accused claimed that he was innocent and has no prior criminal record.
