London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Wednesday congratulated Zohran Mamdani on being elected as the new mayor of New York City. Khan described this election as a victory of hope.

There are many similarities between Khan and Mamdani, the biggest of which is that both have often been the target of former US President Donald Trump. Making a clear reference to the Republican Party, Sadiq Khan described the New York mayor election as an election between hope and fear.
Sadiq Khan wrote on his personal ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle, ‘The people of New York were faced with a clear choice, between hope and fear and as we saw in London, hope won. Many congratulations to @ZohranKMamdani for his historic campaign.

Trump’s comments
Trump has called Zoharan Mamdani, who calls himself a democratic socialist, a pure communist, which is a serious accusation in America. Sadiq Khan of Pakistani origin has also faced criticism from Trump. Trump had called him a stone-cold loser who had done a very bad job as mayor of London.
Both mayors have also come under criticism for their Muslim and immigrant identities, as they are the first people of their respective religions to win mayoral elections in their cities. Both have also been called ‘Hamas supporters’ due to their support of the Palestinian state.
