Ranya Rao Gold Smuggling Case: Challenge of actress Ranya Rao’s custody under COFEPOSA, hearing postponed till September 2 in HC

The Karnataka High Court on Thursday heard the habeas corpus petition filed by Ranya’s half -mother HP Rohini, which challenged the custody of Kannada actor Ranya Rao under the Prevention of Foreign Exchange Protection and Prevention of Trafficking Activities Act, 1974 (COFEPOSA). Justice Anu Shivraman and Justice K.K. A division bench headed by Rajesh Rai heard the petition. On the request of the lawyers representing the central government, the High Court postponed the hearing till 2 September.

Ranya Rao was given conditional bail in an alleged case of gold smuggling on 20 May by the Economic Offenses Court. Despite the bail, he is in custody under Cofeposa (Prevention of Foreign Exchange Protection and Prevention of Smuggling Activities). Earlier, on August 11, Ranya Rao’s half -father Ramchandra Rao, who was sent on compulsory leave, was reinstated to the post of Director General of Police of the Civil Rights Enforcement Directorate and withdrew his leave.

The Under Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms said that the post of Police, Director General of Police, Civil Rights Enforcement Directorate, under Rule 12 of IPS (Pay) Rules 2016, as included in Schedule II of the said rule, has been declared in equivalent status and responsibilities for the post of cadre of Bangalore, Director General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Special Investigation Department, Special Units and Economic Offenses, Bangalore.

DGP Ramchandra Rao was sent on mandatory leave in March after the actress’s arrest in a gold smuggling case. Rao, who is scheduled to retire in May 2026, was sent on compulsory leave in May 2025 when his step daughter Ranya was allegedly arrested at Kamphegowda International Airport with unaccounted gold rods worth Rs 12.56 crore.
