Last Saturday, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha visited Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir and spent time with the affected people, including families who lost their members in the attacks from across the border between May 7 to May 10.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that the government should provide solid, liberal and immediate relief and rehabilitation package for pungles affected by Pakistani shelling and other areas. Last Saturday, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha visited Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir and spent time with the affected people, including families who lost their members in the attacks from across the border between May 7 to May 10.
Gandhi also visited Gurdwara Singh Sabha, temple Geeta Bhawan and Madrasa Zia-ul-Uloom affected by shelling and interacted with students at Christ High School. In a letter to Modi, Gandhi said that he had recently visited Poonch, where 14 people, including 4 children, died and dozens of people were injured in Pakistani shelling. He wrote that this sudden and indiscriminate attack has caused heavy havoc in civilian areas. Hundreds of houses, shops, schools and religious places have been badly damaged. Many victims said that their years of hard work has been destroyed in one stroke.
He said that people from Poonch and other border areas have been living in peace and harmony for decades. He said that today when he is going through this deep crisis, it is our duty to understand their pain and provide all possible help to re -create their lives. I urge the Government of India to bring a solid and liberal relief and rehabilitation package for all other areas affected by Poonch and Pakistani shelling. Sharing a video of the journey, Gandhi said on X, “Poonch’s pain can be felt only by going there. Broken houses, scattered lives – this pain also echoes the same voice – we are Indians.”
