Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, shared an article by Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi on social media on Monday, which exposed the injustice done by the Great Nicobar Island Project to the people of Nicobar and its delicate ecosystems. The Great Nicobar Island Project, the Great Nicobar Island is a major initiative of the Government of India to create overall development and strategic status, including a transmission port, an international airport, an energy plant and a township.

In a post shared on X, Rahul Gandhi said that the Great Nicobar Island Project is a daring, crushing the rights of tribals and making fun of legal and consultation processes. In an editorial by The Hindu, Sonia Gandhi expressed concern that the project is “threat to one of the world’s most unique flora and ecosystems of animals and is highly sensitive to natural disasters.” Sonia Gandhi said, “This completely unfair expenditure of Rs 72,000 crore creates threats for the existence of the island’s original tribal communities.” He argued that Nikobari came to the proposed land area of the tribals’ ancestral village project, and had to leave his villages during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami; Now, this project will permanently displacing this community.

Sonia Gandhi also argued that the Shompan is facing even more threats as the Central Tribal Affairs Ministry will have to give priority to the welfare and “integrity” of the tribe while considering the massive development proposals, according to the island notified by the Union Tribal Affairs Ministry. He further said, “Instead, the project un-conspiring a large part of the Shompan tribal sanctuary, destroys the forest ecosystems where the cramps live and this will lead to large-scale people and tourists on the island.” The Congress leader also said that the constitutional and statutory bodies established for the protection of tribal rights have been sidelined in this entire process.
