At least 39 people, including 16 women and 10 children, died in a stampede during the election rally of Tamilga Vitri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu. In a packed rally, the crowd became uncontrollable and people started fainting, due to which the actor -turned -leader Vijay had to stop his speech in the middle. Chief Minister MK Stalin said that 39 people have died so far. In the history of our state, such a large number of people have never lost their lives in a program organized by any political party and such tragedy should never happen in future. Currently, 51 people are undergoing treatment at intensive medical unit.

Stalin I pay homage to those who have lost their lives. The families of the deceased will be given compensation of Rs 10 lakh. The injured will be given compensation of Rs 1 lakh. I have ordered the formation of an inquiry commission under the chairmanship of a retired judge of the High Court. The district police has registered a case against TVK Karur District Secretary Mathiajhagan. ADGP (law and order) S Davidson Devasiravatham said that 39 people have lost their lives. The case has been registered and preliminary investigation will be done.

Commission for investigation of stampede
