After the funeral of the Pope, what is next?
The Novandiyalas will begin with the Pope’s funeral ceremony. Prayers and special months will last for nine days which will be held for the peace of the soul of Pope Francis. After this, his successor i.e. the process of choosing the next pope will be noticed.
The conclave for the choice of the new Pope usually begins within 15 to 20 days of the last Pope’s death. All cardinals gather for the choice of the Pope, so they take an oath of secrecy in the Cysteine Chapel and start discussions. This process can last for several days.
Cardinals are a group of big priests. Their job is to advise the Pope. Every time the pope is chosen from these cardinals. However, it is not necessary to have a cardinal to become a pope. Urban VI was the last Pope in 1379, who was not selected from the Cardinals College.

After the new Pope is selected, a representative of the Cardinals College announces in the Latin language in front of thousands of people from St. Peters Basilica’s balcony- ‘Bams Papam’ i.e.- ‘We have a pope.’
The pope selected after this chooses a new Pope name. This is usually in his name in honor of an old Saint or Pope. The new Pope gives the public the first address to the Basilica’s balcony by wearing a new kasak (full body -covering dress).
