PM Modi’s big claim: End of Maoism in India is near, Naxalism limited to 3 districts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed satisfaction that Chhattisgarh is gradually being freed from the grip of “Maoist terrorism”. He stressed that the state and the country are now close to being completely free from this menace. Addressing a public meeting at the Chhattisgarh Rajat Mahotsav organized in Nava Raipur to commemorate 25 years of the formation of the state, the Prime Minister recalled the decades-long painful struggle of the people suffering under the shadow of Naxalite violence.

Modi expressed hope about the decline of Maoism in India and said that the day is not far when India will be free from Maoist terror. He highlighted the recent success in countering this movement and the fact that only three districts in the country remain under the grip of Left Wing Extremism. He strongly criticized those who “pretend to defend the Constitution and shed crocodile tears in the name of social justice,” and accused them of “perpetuating decades of injustice for their own political gain.” Highlighting the neglect of tribal areas due to Maoist insurgency, Prime Minister Modi said villages are deprived of roads, schools and hospitals and those in power are “leaving people to their fate and enjoying the luxuries of life.”

The Prime Minister said that after assuming power in 2014, his government had resolved to root out Maoist terrorism from the country. He said, “Eleven years ago, more than 125 districts were affected by Maoist terrorism; today, only three districts are left where its traces remain. The day is not far when Chhattisgarh and the entire country will be completely free from Maoist terrorism.” Earlier in October 2025, the Union Home Ministry had said that the number of Left Wing Extremism (LWE) districts has reduced from 18 earlier this year to 11 now. The three districts most affected by the government are in Chhattisgarh: Bijapur, Sukma and Narayanpur.

In 2013, there were 126 Left Wing Extremism affected districts and after sustained operations, this number was reduced to 18 in April 2025. Prime Minister Modi highlighted significant progress compared to the situation before 2014, when about 125 districts were affected by Maoist violence. He expressed confidence that India is on the verge of being completely free from Maoist terrorism, a goal the government has pledged to achieve by March 31, 2026. The government attributes this success to a multi-pronged strategy combining security operations, infrastructure development and rehabilitation efforts.
