There is a possibility of an informal meeting with Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the summit. Earlier, in October 2024, Prime Minister Modi and Xi Jinping met at the BRICS summit in Kazan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China to attend the regional summit of the Shanghai Cooperation (SCO) to be held in Tianjin city from 31 August to 1 September. This will be his first visit to China after a clash in the Galwan Valley in 2020. He last visited China in 2019. In the discussion with SCO member countries, issues like regional security, terrorism and trade will be discussed. Efforts will be made to restore stability and communication in India-China relations.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar also attended the SCO meetings held earlier this year.

Jaishankar had met Xi Jinping in Beijing and apprised him of recent developments in India-China relations, as well as emphasizing the importance of continuous leadership guidance in advancing bilateral relations. In May 2020, the relations between India and China had deteriorated after a violent clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers in East Ladakh’s Galwan. In this clash, 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives and many people were killed in the Chinese side too.
