PM Modi-Keir Starmer Meet in Mumbai | India-UK strategic partnership gets a new dimension, focus on ‘Vision 2035’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his visiting British counterpart Keir Starmer met in Mumbai today and are scheduled to engage in talks aimed at strengthening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership under the Vision 2035 roadmap.Their discussions will also include participation in the CEO Forum and Global Fintech Fest 2025 as well as cooperation in trade, investment, technology, defence, climate and education.

The discussions mainly focused on promoting India-UK relations in the areas of trade, defence, security and critical technology. The British leader arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday morning on a two-day visit with a delegation of 125 of Britain’s most prominent business leaders, entrepreneurs and academics. Starmer’s visit to India comes two and a half months after the two countries signed a historic free trade agreement.

This agreement will increase market access, reduce tariffs and is expected to double bilateral trade by 2030. The trade agreement was finalized during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to London in July. In his remarks on Wednesday, Starmer said the trade deal is a “launchpad” for two-way growth and will pave the way for India to become the third-largest global economy by 2028.

“We signed a huge trade deal with India in July, which is the most secure by any country,” he said. India is going to become the world’s third largest economy by 2028 and with it, trade is going to be fast and affordable, so the opportunities before us are unmatched.

In the talks, the Indian side is expected to raise its concerns over the activities of some pro-Khalistan elements from British soil and also advocate the extradition of several billionaire fugitives from Britain to India, including Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.
