Order not to hand over any work to Justice Verma On March 22, CJI Sanjeev Khanna formed a three -member committee to investigate the allegations against Justice Verma. He has asked Delhi High Court Chief Justice not to hand over any work to Justice Verma.

On March 21, some reports claimed that the cash was recovered after a fire on the night of 14 March at the bungalow in Lutyens Delhi, Justice Verma’s Lutyens. Justice Verma was out of the city during the incident.

After this, the statement of Fire Service Chief Atul Garg came out late in the evening, in which he was quoted that his team had not received any cash while extinguishing the fire of Justice Verma.

Earlier in 2018, the CBI lodged an FIR against Justice Verma in the case of disturbances in the Simbhavali sugar mill of Ghaziabad. According to NDTV report, Oriental Bank of Commerce complained of the mill disturbances. The complaint said that the sugar mill has misused a loan of Rs 97.85 crore issued for the farmers.

Justice Verma was then the non-executive director of the company. The CBI started investigation in this case. However, the investigation slowed down. In February 2024, a court ordered the CBI to resume the closed investigation, but the Supreme Court overturned the order and the CBI stopped the investigation.

On the day of Holi, Lutyens Delhi bungalow was on fire

  • The cash was recovered after the fire on Holi at around 11.35 pm on March 14 at the bungalow in Lutyens Delhi, Justice Verma.
  • The fire department personnel of Delhi reached the spot and extinguished the fire. Justice Verma was out of the city during the incident. His family was present at the house.
  • The Supreme Court Collegium transferred Justice Verma back to the Allahabad High Court. However, the Supreme Court in its statement made it clear that the news of the judge getting cash from the bungalow and their transfer has no relation.

Case of getting heavy cash at judge’s bungalow was raised in Parliament Congress MP Jairam Ramesh raised the matter in the Rajya Sabha on 14 March. He had raised the issue of judicial accountability and mentioned the pending notice to the Chairman regarding impeachment against a judge of the Allahabad High Court.
