Razia Sultana, in her petition, demanded returning the Red Fort or compensation from 1857 till date.
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the petition of the woman seeking possession of the Red Fort. Razia Sultana Begum describes herself as the wife of Mirza Bedar Bakht, the grandson of the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.
Being a legal successor, Razia Sultana, in her petition, demanded returning the Red Fort or compensation from 1857 till date. A bench of CJI Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar called the petition wrong and baseless.
The court also refused to allow Sultana Begum’s counsel to withdraw the petition. CJI commented and said- Why do you stop till the Red Fort? Why didn’t Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and other forts also claim?
Earlier, the Delhi High Court rejected Sultana Begum’s petition on 13 December 2024. Sultana Begum challenged the High Court’s decision in the Supreme Court.

Who is Razia Sultana Begum
Razia Sultana Begum claims that she is the wife of Mirza Bedar Bakht, the grandson of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last king of the Mughal Sultanate. She was married on 15 August 1965, when Sultana was 12 years old. Sultana, originally from Lucknow, spent his childhood to Nana’s house in Kolkata. These days she is living in a colony in Shivpuri area of Howrah.
Sultana takes a ticket of 50 rupees in the Red Fort
Sultana Begum says- I am the daughter -in -law of the Mughal family, but take a ticket of 50 rupees in the Red Fort. I pay 40 rupees in Humayun’s tomb. While it is the princely state of my family. Where did the Mughals take away, tell me the name of one, then I will bow my head. It is the responsibility of the government.
Sultana Begum- Government of India is illegally occupying property
On December 20, 2021, the Delhi High Court rejected the petition demanding possession of the Red Fort. The court had said that there has been a delay of more than 150 years in filing the case.
Sultana Begum had said in her petition that she is the real owner of the Red Fort as she inherited this property from her ancestor Bahadur Shah Zafar II and the Indian government is illegally occupying such property.
After this, Sultana filed a petition for the second time in December 2024. Which was rejected by a bench of Acting Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.
In his petition, Sultana Begum had said that in 1960 the government of Jawaharlal Nehru considered Mirza Muhammad Bedar Bakht the successor of Bahadur Shah Zafar and gave him political pension.
