Petition filed in Supreme Court to extend the duration of SIR process by three months in Uttar Pradesh

Bharatiya Kisan Union Azad Trust has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to extend by three months the period of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists released in Uttar Pradesh.

The petition has alleged that it is administratively impossible to conduct Special Intensive Review (SIR) of 15.35 crore voters in the state in four weeks and it may lead to the risk of disenfranchisement of a large number of people.

In the petition, a demand has been made to extend the duration of this exercise by three months, so that wrongful deletion of names can be avoided, rural voters do not face problems and the voter lists can be revised fairly and accurately.

The Election Commission had started the process of SIR in Uttar Pradesh on November 4. Officials said that under this campaign, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit every house till December 4 to check and update the details of voters.
