Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said on Thursday that as part of the precautionary measures to prevent illegal migrants from obtaining Indian citizenship, individuals over 18 years of age would not be able to make Aadhaar card for the first time in the state.
He told reporters after the cabinet meeting that persons over 18 years of age will be given only one month time to apply for Aadhaar card, provided that Aadhaar card is not yet made.
However, he said that Aadhaar cards will be issued for the next one year to the tribals living in tea gardens, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes above 18 years of age.
Sharma said, “The decision to ban the Aadhaar card is considered part of the efforts to ensure the authenticity of the identity of citizens. This step shows the government focusing on removing the concerns related to possible infiltration from Bangladesh in the last one year.
