In a recent interview, he spoke openly about the hatred to give up his Pakistani citizenship and adopt Indian identity. He also described it as a form of love “that manifests in an absurd way”. He said during a conversation with Bollywood bubble, “It is like an ex -boyfriend. When an ex -boyfriend sees you moving forward and connecting with someone else, they always seek reasons to hate you. But they do this because they still have not recovered from you. It is love, and love appears in many absurd ways.”

Describing this reaction as a textbook example of the “citrus grape” phenomenon, Adnan insisted that while he understood where the rejection lies, most of his critics fail to understand the complexity behind his decision. He reiterated that outsiders often make perceptions without understanding the situations that they had to choose such a decisive option. Born in the UK, Sami finally had both Pakistani and Canadian citizens before settling in India.
His move in 2001 concluded in 2016 as he was given Indian citizenship – a decision that he considers guided for extremely personal and compelling reasons, which was not taken lightly or without thinking.
