Pakistan bleeds in Gaza protest: 11 killed in police-Islamic group clash, tension deepens

Violent clashes continued in Lahore on Saturday between police and Islamist group Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), as security forces tried to stop protesters from advancing towards the capital, where they were scheduled to hold a pro-Palestine rally. Describing the Punjab Police as “Israeli goons”, Tehreek-e-Labbaik claimed that the police opened indiscriminate fire on the protesters, killing 11 of its members and injuring more than 50. Since morning till now 11 TLP people have been killed. There is continuous shelling and firing.

The protests that began on Thursday against Israel’s killings in Gaza intensified on Saturday when police fired tear gas and baton-charged protesters at several places. The protesters pelted stones at the police, injuring dozens of policemen, The Dawn reported. Clashes intensified near Lahore’s Azadi Chowk, where several police vehicles were set on fire and several officers were injured.

In many areas, police set up barricades, placed shipping containers and even dug trenches to prevent thousands of TLP protesters, led by the organization’s chief Saad Rizvi, from marching towards Islamabad to protest near the US Embassy. Lahore is about 370 kilometers from Islamabad. The US Embassy has advised its citizens to avoid large crowds and be aware of their surroundings.
