Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, has resumed his efforts to revive the South Asian Regional Cooperation Organization (SAARC), hanging in the balance since the 2016 -sponsored Uri terror attacks in 2016, killing 17 Indian soldiers. During his meeting with Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Younus once again emphasized the need to strengthen not only bilateral relations with Islamabad, but also regional cooperation. Yunus’s new attempt to re -activate SAARC at the center of his efforts of strong regional connection. In the presence of Dar, Younus said I encourage SAARC (South Asian Regional Cooperation Organization) and consider our relations with Pakistan and other SAARC countries one of the highest priorities. Dar is the first Pakistani Foreign Minister to travel to Bangladesh in 13 years.

Yunus met Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during the United Nations General Assembly in New York last year for the revival of SAARC. The meeting took place a few days after he took over. In his discussions, the issue of revival of SAARC was prominently overshadowed. The organization including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka has not held any summit since the conference in Kathmandu in 2014.

During his recent meeting with Ishaq Dar, Younus emphasized the importance of fully exploring the opportunities for cooperation within the region. The inaction of the SAARC is due to the increased tension, especially after the Uri attack of regional tensions, especially after the 2016 Uri attack, due to which other countries including India and Bangladesh boycotted the summit in Islamabad that year.
