Outcry due to superstorm Montha! Andhra-Odisha high alert, warning of heavy rain till 31 in Jharkhand

Cyclonic storm “Montha” over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Monday. Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are on high alert, accelerating evacuations and preparing for the storm to approach Kakinada tonight. The storm, which is expected to pack winds of up to 110 kilometers per hour, has already triggered heavy rains and strong winds in the coastal region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in some parts of Jharkhand till October 31 due to the impact of the cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal. IMD said in a bulletin that cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ turned into a severe cyclonic storm by 5.30 am on Tuesday. ‘Montha’ means fragrant flower in Thai. The storm was centered about 190 km south-east of Machilipatnam, 270 km south-east of Kakinada and 340 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh at 5.30 am.

“It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast around Kakinada between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam as a severe cyclonic storm during Tuesday evening and night,” the bulletin said. During this period, the maximum wind speed will be 90-100 km per hour and winds can blow at a speed of 110 km per hour.

Issuing a warning for Jharkhand, meteorologists said that parts of Simdega, West Singhbhum, Khunti and Gumla are likely to receive heavy rain on Tuesday, while parts of Chatra, Garhwa, Latehar and Palamu may receive very heavy rain on Wednesday. He said that there is a possibility of heavy rain in some parts of Giridih, Koderma, Lohardaga, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Dumka, Godda, Pakur and Sahebganj on October 30 and 31.
