State medical officials have ordered an inquiry after the death of six people on Tuesday night after alleged “wrong injections” at a government hospital in Odisha. The incident occurred at Shaheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput, which is a Government III Health Service Center in the southern part of Odisha. The deceased are from different parts of undivided Koraput and Kalahandi districts.
Superintendent of Koraput Medical College Susant Sahu said, “Four patients died in surgery ICU and one patient in surgery ward. A patient admitted in ICU was suffering from cervical cancer and was in the fourth stage. Three others suffered serious stomach injuries and one had serious liver problems. Another patient had serious head injuries. Sources in the hospital said that the five patients died between 10 pm and 11 pm and their condition was critical.
Opposition Biju Janata Dal and Congress demanded action against those responsible for the death of patients. Three men and three women died shortly on Tuesday night. Five patients died between 11 pm and 12 pm, while the sixth patient died at around 3:30 pm on Tuesday. His family alleged that he was injected, after which he died. Hospital Superintendent Sushant Kumar Sahu said that departmental inquiry has been ordered.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) of Odisha has also constituted a panel of five senior doctors from two major medical colleges of the state. The panel has to submit its report by Thursday evening.
