ODI team captain Shubman Gill addressed the press before the second Test against West Indies on Thursday. During this, he said that senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will remain a part of the plans for the ODI World Cup to be held in 2027. He also said that the skill and immense experience of these two players cannot be ignored. He also said that when he takes charge of this format from the Australia tour later this month, like his predecessor Rohit Sharma, he will try to maintain a calm atmosphere in the dressing room and be friendly with the players.
26-year-old Gill, who is already captaining the Indian Test team, will start his ODI captaincy with the three-match series to be held in Australia from October 19 to 25. Asked if he thought Rohit and Kohli were part of the plans for the next ODI World Cup, Gill was not as cautious as selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar, who was non-committal on the issue during a recent press conference.
Gill, while answering questions regarding appointing him as the captain of the ODI team on the eve of the second Test match against West Indies, said, ‘Absolutely.’ The experience he has and the number of matches he has won for India. There are very few players who have won so many matches for India.
Gill further said that, there are very few players in the world who have so much skill, quality and experience. I am very happy to see this. Rohit is now 38, while Kohli is 36 years old. Both have retired from Test and T20 International cricket and thus will be able to play very few matches for India. All eyes will be on the performance of these two greats during the Australia tour.
