The new session 2025-26 has started in the state government schools and the admission process in schools is going on. Many efforts have been made by the state government to improve education. Under the new reforms, the initiative of education revolution has also been taken recently in schools. At the same time, nursery class was also started in government schools of Punjab by the AAP government last year.
Students were admitted to nursery classes for 2024-25 academic session in compliance with the National Education Policy (NEP) in schools. Earlier, there was only 2 years of kindergarten (LKG and UKG) in government schools. At the same time, guidelines have been issued by the Education Department regarding admissions in schools and under these guidelines, age limit has also been fixed for admission of children in schools.
At the same time, there will be three classes in the pre-primary section, Nursery, LKG and UKG. In the letter issued for this, according to the instructions of the state government, the age limit for admission to the nursery class has been fixed at 3 years. At the same time, the minimum age for admission in the first class has been fixed at 6 years. This age should be completed by 1 April 2024. For admission to nursery, the child should be 3 to 4 years, 4 to 5 years for LKG and 5 to 6 years for UKG. Only those children will get admission in the first grade, whose age will be 6 years or more.
This decision has been taken with the aim of strengthening the basic education of children. At the same time, the Education Department has said that this rule will not apply to students who are already admitted to government schools 2023-24 or before and their age is less than set standards. They will be promoted in the next class itself. The time of the newly started nursery class will be only 1 hour. In this, separate guidelines will be issued for education related activities.
The time of LKG, UKG and primary classes will remain according to the guidelines already issued. The School Education Department has asked all the districts to ensure strict adherence to these instructions.
