Dozens of soldiers as well as civilians have been killed in fresh clashes that broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, reports said on Wednesday quoting security officials from both sides. Hours after the first reports of border fighting emerged, Pakistan carried out airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, Reuters reported, citing officials from both sides. The Pakistani army said two attacks by Afghanistan’s Taliban on key border posts in the south-west and north-west were foiled. About 20 Taliban fighters were killed early Wednesday in attacks near Spin Boldak on the Afghan side of the border in southern Kandahar province, according to news agency AFP.

“Unfortunately, the attack was carried out in divided villages of the area, with no regard for the general population,” the report quoted the army as saying. The Pakistani military said about 30 more Taliban fighters were likely killed in overnight clashes along the northwestern border. Afghan officials told the news agency that 15 civilians were killed and dozens were injured in the latest violence on the border between the two countries. Reuters quoted security officials as saying that six Pakistani paramilitary personnel were killed and the same number were injured in fighting between soldiers and militants in Pakistan’s border district of Orakzai.

Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid accused the Pakistani army of launching another attack with light and heavy weapons in the district. The incident comes days after the clash between the two countries last weekend, when Afghanistan retaliated against Pakistan. The attack was carried out in response to an attack in the Afghan capital Kabul, for which Pakistan was held responsible.
