The information being shared by some people about the cancellation of Nimisha Priya’s death sentence is wrong. Earlier, the office of Indian Grand Mufti Abubkar Muslims of Kanthapuram, Andhra Pradesh issued a statement on Monday saying that Nimisha Priya’s death sentence, which was previously suspended, was canceled. A statement issued by the Grand Mufti’s office and the news agency ANI was quoted as saying that a high-level meeting in Sana first decided to completely cancel the punishment of the temporarily suspended death. However, the office clarified that it has not yet received official written confirmation from the Yemen government.

Amidst these developments, the Indian authorities looking at the case have not confirmed any claims made by the Muslim and Paul regarding the case. Significantly, Priya was to be hanged on July 16, but was postponed after the intervention of Indian officials and overseas Indians, who were demanding relief from the hanging of the Indian nurse.
Why was Nimisha Priya blamed?
A nurse in Palakkad district of Kerala, Nimisha went to Yemen in 2008 for better employment prospects. After being a trained nurse, he later shared a commercial partnership with Yamani citizen Talal Abdo Mahadi and jointly ran a clinic in the capital Sana. Her relations with the Yemeni commercial partner allegedly deteriorated when Mahdi allegedly started harassing her, falsely claimed to be her husband and seized her passport – so that she could not return to India. Although, to get back her documents, Priya allegedly fainted Mahdi in 2017, the attempt proved fatal, as Mahdi died of suspected drug overdose. Later, he was arrested in 2018 and convicted of murder, and in 2020 he was sentenced to death by a Yemeni court.
