Nimisha Priya Death Sentence: The date of punishment-e-death has come in Yemen, now how will Nimisha Priya’s life be saved?

Indian nurse Nimisha Priya of Kollangode in Palakkad district of Kerala will be sentenced to death in Yemen on 16 July after being convicted of killing a Yemeni citizen in 2017. Complicated with geopolitical and legal challenges, the case has attracted immediate diplomatic attention of New Delhi. But there is no success. The 37 -year -old woman went to Yemen in connection with work. She reached a prison in the capital Sanaa, which is under the control of the Iran -backed Huti administration, with which India has no formal diplomatic relations.

Who is Nimisha Priya?

Nurse Priya, a nurse from Kollengode in Palakkad district of Kerala, went to Yemen in 2008 to pursue a career in healthcare. According to media reports, his parents work as a daily wage laborer and had to provide them financial assistance. Her husband and minor daughter returned to India in 2014 for financial reasons and the same year, Yemen was hit by Civil War and could not go back as the country stopped issuing new visas. Priya was given the death penalty by a trial court in 2020 and the Supreme Judicial Council of Yemen upheld the verdict in November 2023. Yemen’s President Rashad Al-Ali has allegedly approved Priya’s death sentence.

Indian efforts continue amidst the prescribed hanging of Nimisha Priya

India is actively working to stop the hanging of Priya. An Indian official said, “We have been keeping a close watch on the matter since he was sentenced to death.” We are in regular contact with Yemeni officials and its family members and have provided all possible help. He further said that we are constantly monitoring the matter. The government had earlier said in Parliament that it is providing all possible assistance to Nimisha Priya’s family. However, a major challenge has lacked formal diplomatic mediums with the Huti administration, making it difficult to negotiate.
