The death toll in a mosque firing and several nearby villages in a mosque in north-western Nigeria has increased to 50. A local official gave this information on Wednesday.

According to MP Aminu Ibrahim, during the morning prayers on Tuesday, gunmen attacked the mosque of the city of Unguwan Mantau in the state of Katsina. Ibrahim told Parliament, “The bandits killed 30 people during the attack on several villages and burnt 20 others.”

Officials had earlier reported that at least 13 people were killed in the mosque. Such attacks often occur in the northwest and north-middle areas of Nigeria. Here local shepherds and farmers often clash with each other over limited access to land and water.
