Nepal Gen-Z Protests: More than 15000 prisoners absconding amidst Nepal stress, number of dead reached 31

The death toll in the ongoing Gen-Z protests in Nepal has increased to 31, the authorities have confirmed that 25 victims have so far been initially identified. According to the Forensic Medicine Department of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where the bodies are kept, the identity of five men and a woman is still unknown. According to Kathmandu Post, the head of the department, Dr. Gopal Kumar Chaudhary said that we have done the postmortem of the body according to the international protocol. We have been asked to keep the body safe. We cannot give detailed information about the deceased right now. Officials said that the identity of most people has been confirmed by documents and family identity cards recovered from the scene.

Jail violence and collective jailbreak

Amidst the current unrest, at least three prisoners were killed and 13 others were injured in a violent clash at the Ramechhap district prison in Madhesh province on Thursday. The incident began when the prisoners tried to flee by exploding in the gas cylinder. Sources were quoted as saying that security personnel opened fire to control the situation, in which three prisoners died on the spot. The injured were taken to the Ramechap district hospital. Significantly, since Tuesday, violence has arisen in jails across the country, due to which the prisoners have escaped on a large scale. Kathmandu Post quoted the police as saying, “Jailbreaks started when young protesters attacked several jails, set fire to administrative buildings and forcibly opened the jail doors. By Wednesday evening, preliminary reports confirmed that more than 15,000 prisoners had escaped from more than 25 jails, out of which only a few voluntarily returned or arrested.

According to jailer Rajendra Sharma, 773 prisoners managed to escape from Kaski district prison in Gandaki province, including 13 Indians and four other foreigners. The Prison Management Department has confirmed that the final statistics are still being compiled. Director General Leela Prasad Sharma said that we are collecting all the available resources to arrest him as soon as possible. Earlier this week, five teenage prisoners were killed in a clash with security personnel at the Naubasta Kishore Reform Home in Banke district. When the police tried to stop the prisoners from snatching weapons during chaos, they were shot. The most affected centers include the Central Jail (3,300 prisoners) at Sundhara, Nakkhu Prison (1,400) in Lalitpur, Delhi Bazaar Prison (1,100), Jhumka Prison (1,575) in Sunsari and Banke District Jail (436). Hundreds of prisoners have also been reported from other jails of Kapilvastu, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Mahotari and Sindhuli.
