A day after anti -government violent demonstrations in Nepal, from Wednesday morning, army personnel were deployed in Kathmandu and other cities to implement the ban and restore peace. P. Sharma Oli has had to resign from the post of Prime Minister. The Nepali army, which commands the security operations of the entire country at 10 pm on Tuesday night, has banned many areas across the country including Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur cities to control the unrest even hours after Oli left the post.
The army in a statement expressed concern over the actions of some groups, which are “taking undue advantage of difficult situations” and “are causing serious harm to common citizens and public property.” An official of the Nepal Army Headquarters said, “We have deployed their soldiers to stop any untoward incident including looting and sabotage.”
He said that the authorities have also issued an order to the residents that they should remain inside the house until “extremely necessary”, so that further disturbance can be prevented. Since morning, Kathmandu’s generally moving roads looked deserted. Only a few people came out of the houses and that too especially to buy things of everyday needed.
There is strict patrolling of security personnel on the roads and fire engines were seen on Tuesday to extinguish the fire by protesters in government and private buildings. The protesters on Tuesday set fire to Parliament, President’s Office, Prime Minister’s residence, government buildings, offices of political parties and homes of senior leaders.
Hundreds of protesters entered his office demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Oli after the death of at least 19 people in police action during the protests by ‘Jane-G’ against the government’s ban on corruption and social media on Monday. The ban on social media was lifted on Monday night.
