‘Nationalism’ versus Congress politics over Asia Cup win; Singhvi breaks silence, party silent

After India won the Asia Cup by defeating Pakistan, senior advocate and Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi resorted to X to remember that moment. He wrote, “When sports meet symbolism! Our champions not only won the Asia Cup, but also raised the pride of the country. And when trying to escape with the ACC major trophy, the Indian players responded with emoji, not ego. He wrote India’s sports dominance, linking it to the dramatic scenes held at the award distribution ceremony.

Singhvi and many other leaders celebrated the victory, but the Congress party has not yet issued any official congratulatory statement. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah praised Tilak Verma’s unbeaten 69 runs and Kuldeep Yadav’s four wickets, praising the “youth team”, which created history. Sachin Pilot called it a “incredible performance”, while Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda described Verma’s innings as “one of the best innings under pressure” and then shared a picture of a celebration which was titled: “Champions.”

This enthusiastic praise is completely opposite to the party’s earlier stance on the tournament. In April, Congress workers in Jaipur staged a protest against the match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup in Jaipur after the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam in April, in which 26 people were killed. He burnt effigies symbols of Pakistan sponsored terrorism and vandalized LED TV brought to the protest site. He argued that the match disrespects the feelings of the victims.

In Delhi too, opposition leaders staged a sit -in and urged to boycott the match citing a delicate political atmosphere in the months after the attack. But if there was a demand for boycott before the final, the results again focused on cricket and then politics associated with it. On the field, India defeated Pakistan by five wickets to win the trophy, Verma took charge of the team and Kuldeep destroyed Pakistan’s batting order. But the celebration soon took political color.
