The Mumbai Police handled the crowd efficiently and cleverly amidst thousands of Marathas gathering in Mumbai to participate in the reservation movement led by activist Manoj Jarange, causing the situation to a large extent peaceful during the five -day agitation. The situation never came out of control during the protests held at Azad Maidan located near the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) building in South Mumbai.
Jarange launched a hunger strike on August 29 demanding Maratha reservation and ended it on Tuesday afternoon after the state government accepted most of their demands. Last week, when he started his indefinite fast, the protesters from all over Maharashtra reached the venue to show solidarity with him. A crowd of protesters was seen at the main intersections of South Mumbai, causing traffic jams in the morning. Many of them went inside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) campus, even laying a mat on the platform.

An official said on Tuesday that before the agitation at Azad Maidan, the Mumbai Police prepared to deal with the protesters and held meetings with Jarang’s team. Azad Maidan was deployed at Azad Maidan, along with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Quick Action Force (RAF) along with SRPF, Danga Control Police and Maharashtra Security Forces.
The police had allowed a one -day protest at Azad Maidan on August 29, in which only 5,000 protesters were allowed to attend. But the official said that as soon as the agitation started, more than 60,000 people in 8,000 vehicles gathered in Mumbai, which blocked all the ways leading to the protest site.

Apart from drone, the police said the official said that the situation was also monitoring the situation through CCTV cameras installed in South Mumbai. Many such incidents were also seen, where the protesters blocked the traffic and remained adamant that they would be removed only when Jarge would give them instructions. On such occasions, senior officials including Joint Police Commissioner Satya Narayan Chaudhary, Additional Commissioner of Police Abhinav Deshmukh and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Praveen Mundhe were seen on the spot.
DCP Mundhe immediately made a video call to Jarang, who asked the protesters to cooperate with the police and after that the protesters were withdrawn. The situation became more tense when the Mumbai High Court asked the government to vacate the roads before 3 pm on Tuesday, after which senior police officers again started asking the protesters to remove their vehicles from the roads in front of Azad Maidan and CSMT.
The police were seen making announcements to remove vehicles from public places and ask the protesters to park the vehicles in the neighboring Navi Mumbai. On Tuesday, when the crowd decreased and the protesters vacated the entire area of the Azad Maidan, Joint Police Commissioner Chaudhary visited the spot to appreciate the efforts of the police personnel.
He said, “All of you made your best attempts, all of you handled the situation well. I am proud of all of you. “Another senior police officer said in a conversation with ‘PTI-Bhasha’,” Despite such a large number of protesters gathering at one place, the situation never came out of control. The police handled the situation well and efficiently, causing no confrontation.
