Maldives President Mohammad Mujju thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday after his recent visit. Mujju said that this visit of the Prime Minister will boost tourism in Maldives and will also strengthen mutual relations between the people of both countries.
Muizu described India as a ‘prominent contributor’ in tourism
President Mujju appreciated India’s contribution to the tourism sector of Maldives and described it as ‘one of the major countries’. He insisted, “India is one of the major countries that promote the tourism of the Maldives, the Prime Minister’s visit will increase it and will also strengthen mutual relations between our people.”

UPI will increase the number of Indian tourists
Meanwhile, the Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian told Wion News that the UPI agreement between India and Maldives will ‘increase the number of Indian tourists in Maldives to 10-15%’. He clarified that after the UPI agreement, it will now be extremely ‘easy’ for Indian tourists to book and pay in Maldives, as they will get the facility to pay directly from their bank accounts instead of changing the currency.
Maldives tourism target and India’s contribution
Maldives Tourism and Environment Minister Thorik Ibrahim also hoped that the arrival of tourists from India will increase with the opening of Velana International Airport and especially Prime Minister Modi’s visit.
Ibrahim told news agency ANI, ‘This year our goal is to bring about 23 lakh tourists in the country. So far we have reached about 12 lakh tourists, and I would like to tell that out of these 12 lakh tourists, 10 lakh tourists are from India. This figure reflects India’s significant contribution to the tourism sector of Maldives.

The possibility of Mujju’s visit to India
When Muizu was asked if he was planning to come to India soon, he hoped that this would happen. He said, “I don’t know that this year or perhaps in the near future.”
