There is now an uproar in the US Parliament over the increasing economic tension between America and India. Now voices have started being raised within the US Parliament i.e. US Congress itself. America’s lawmakers have now written a letter to Donald Trump. It is clearly said that the deteriorating relations with India should be immediately taken care of and 50% tariff imposed on India should be withdrawn. This is not just a letter but a big signal within American politics that India is now seen not just as a friend but as a strategic partner. In fact, at the end of August 2025, Donald Trump gave a big economic blow to India. He stabbed India in the back and imposed a total tariff of 50% on Indian goods. First 25% as reciprocal duty and then an additional 25% punitive duty in response to India buying Russian oil.

19 members of the United States Congress have written to President Donald Trump, urging him to take immediate steps to improve relations with India, which have deteriorated following recent tariff actions against the world’s largest democracy. US lawmakers said in a letter to President Trump that as members of Congress, we represent districts where there are large, vibrant Indian-American communities and who have strong familial, cultural and economic ties with India. Recent actions by your administration have strained relations with the world’s largest democracy, leading to negative consequences for both countries. The joint letter urged immediate action to restore balance in bilateral relations.

The lawmakers said in late August the Trump administration increased tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, including an initial 25% “reciprocated” tariff in response to an additional 25% duty on India’s energy imports from Russia. These punitive measures have harmed Indian manufacturers, increased prices for American consumers and harmed the complex supply chains on which American companies depend, the lawmakers said. Trump has been warned that if tariffs continue to increase, these relations will be in danger.

He recommended that the Administration begin by reviewing existing tariff policy and continuing dialogue with Indian leadership. On this letter, representative Deborah K. Ross, Ro Khanna, Brad Sherman, Raja Krishnamurthy, Pramila Jayapal, Frank Pallone Jr. and several others representing districts with large Indian-American populations.
