China on Friday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to the Tianjin Yatra for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit to be held later this month. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to China since 2019. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiyakun said that the summit, which runs from August 31 to September 1, will participate in all the members of the SCO and leaders from more than 20 countries, including heads of 10 international organizations. Describing it as the largest SCO conference since the establishment of the group, Guo Jiyakun said that we believe that this summit would be a confluence of solidarity, friendship and meaningful consequences. After stopping in Japan, Prime Minister Modi is expected to reach Tianjin, where he will attend the annual India-Japan summit with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on 30 August.

His upcoming Tianjin Yatra, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will take place after several meetings related to SCO in China in recent months. The journey is taking place amid growing geopolitical tensions, including BRICS countries by US President Donald Trump – many of which are SCO members – criticism for buying Russian oil. Russia is about to send its representatives to this summit, although it is not clear whether President Vladimir Putin will participate in it or not.

In June, India refused to sign a document of SCO Defense Ministers, in which, according to sources, there was no mention of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, killing 26 people, while the Balochistan province of Pakistan mentioned unrest. However, in July, China strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack and called for further increase in regional anti-terrorism cooperation. The SCO currently has nine member countries China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Iran and Uzbekistan.
