The ministry also said that onion prices were being stabilized through buffer stocks. The results of the central government’s efforts to reduce its rates are now coming to light. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the government is extracting onions with buffer stock on the principle of fall-in-first-out (FIFO) to reduce onion rates and minimize stock losses. Onions are being supplied to all the states in warehouses at a price of just Rs 21 per kg.

According to the ministry, onion prices have been on the rise since the first week of October due to supply disruption due to rains. At present, onion is cheaper than last year at an average retail price of Rs 40.13 per kg, while in the wholesale market it is Rs 31.15 per kg. According to the data, the retail price of onion in Delhi fell to Rs 44 per kg on Wednesday from Rs 49 in the previous two weeks. In Mumbai, the price has come down from Rs 50 on October 14 to Rs 45 per kg.
