Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray has written a letter to the top bank body Indian Banks Association (IBA), saying that it should give banks to work in Marathi. If he does not do so, his party will intensify its movement.
MNS leaders handed over the letter to IBA officials on 9 April. Thackeray also wrote that if the bank does not follow the three language formulas (English, Hindi and local language i.e. Marathi) in its services, then the bank itself will be responsible for the deteriorating situation. The letter states that the Reserve Bank of India has issued a circular regarding the use of local languages in government and private banks.
Earlier on April 5, Thackeray had asked party workers to stop the movement to promote the use of Marathi. Thackeray had demanded to make Marathi mandatory at Gudi Padwa rally on 30 March. He warned that those who do not deliberately speak Marathi would be slapped.

Bank Unions wrote a letter to CM Fadnavis Bankers in Maharashtra appealed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to provide security on 4 April. The bank union wrote a letter to the CM after several incidents of attacks on employees in banks across the state.
The United Forum of Bank Unions wrote in the letter that MNS workers are coming to banks and threatening employees. The workers pressurize all the display boards of the bank to get it installed in Marathi and only to speak Marathi to the employees. The letter also mentions the attacks on them.
The union wrote that most banks have display boards in three official languages, including Marathi. Most of the employees are Marathi speaking, but some officers do not speak Marathi. It is unfortunate to expect those officers to be proficient in all 22 recognized languages.
In the case, CM Fadnavis had said that it is not wrong to emphasize the use of Marathi language. But if a law is taken in hand, it will not be tolerated and will be dealt with properly.

Marathi vote bank big factor The MNS has to struggle to maintain a political hold. In the 2009 Maharashtra assembly elections, the party won 13 seats, mainly by Marathi voters.
However, its vote share declined due to the increasing influence of rival parties such as various factions of BJP and Shiv Sena in later elections.
