New Delhi. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday told the Supreme Court that Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi cannot be granted bail as he is a mastermind of Maoist activities in the state. In Assam, an independent MLA who was allegedly vocal against the BJP-led central government during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in 2019 has moved the Supreme Court against a February 9 Gauhati High Court order.

The High Court had allowed an NIA court to proceed with framing of charges in one of the two cases against him. A bench of Justices V Ramasubramaniam and Pankaj Mittal granted Gogoi protection from arrest till March 3 and said it would hear the matter on Friday.

At the outset of the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the NIA in the apex court, referred to the chargesheet filed by the agency and said that Gogoi is a mastermind of Maoist activities in the northeastern state.

Mehta said that there are 64 FIRs registered against Gogoi. On the other hand, senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for Gogoi, argued that there was a wide base of political vendetta against his client.

Ahmadi said, “Gogoi is a political leader and an elected public representative. He is against a certain political regime, which is why they want to send him to jail.” The bench said it will hear the matter on Friday. (agency)
