Meghalaya Nagaland Election 2023: The noise of the ongoing elections for the assembly elections in Meghalaya and Nagaland stopped today i.e. on the evening of 25 February. In both the princely states, votes will be cast on February 27 amid tight security. All the preparations for the voting are in the final stage. The BJP is still in power in Meghalaya and Nagaland. This time BJP and NPP are contesting separately in Meghalaya, while in Nagaland BJP has entered the fray with its old partner NDPP.
More than 13 lakh voters in Nagaland
Nagaland has more than 13 lakh voters and 183 candidates, including four women and 19 independents, are in the fray for 59 seats in the 60-member assembly. Voting will be held in the state on February 27 from 7 am to 4 pm. The counting of votes will take place on March 2. The ruling Nationalist Democratic Party (NDPP) and the BJP are contesting 40 and 20 seats, respectively, under seat sharing. In 2018, the NDPP formed the government in this northeastern state in alliance with the BJP. He also got the support of Janata Dal United and an independent candidate. In the year 2021, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) also joined the NDPP-led ruling coalition and was named United Democratic Alliance. The NDPP-BJP alliance is fighting for a second term in this election. Neiphiu Rio of NDPP is the face of the chief minister’s post from this alliance.
Voting on 27 for 59 seats in Meghalaya Assembly
At the same time, voting will be held for 59 seats in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on February 27 and the results will come on March 2. The Election Commission has made preparations for conducting free, fair and peaceful polling on 27th February. The electoral fate of a total of 369 candidates is at stake. The commission informed that voters will exercise their franchise at a total of 3,419 polling stations, out of which 640 polling stations have been identified as sensitive, 323 polling stations as highly sensitive and 84 polling stations as high risk. It was told that 119 companies of CAPFs have been deployed for the elections across the state.
NPP engaged in trying to get a second term
In Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) is seeking a second term, while the Trinamool Congress, led by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, is working hard to win the assembly elections. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee have campaigned in the state and the party hopes to retain power. The Trinamool Congress became the main opposition party in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly overnight by inducting most of the Congress MLAs including Sangma into the party. At the same time, the BJP, which ran the government for five years under the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), is alone in the fray and is hoping to increase its strength in the assembly this time.
Ruling NPP fielded its candidates on 57 seats
The Meghalaya Assembly has 60 seats, but the election to the Sohiong seat in East Khasi Hills district has been postponed due to the death of UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh. The ruling NPP has fielded its candidates on 57 seats. Congress and BJP are fighting on all the seats while Trinamool Congress has fielded candidates on 58 seats. 46 candidates of the United Democratic Party (UDF) are in the fray. VPP is contesting on 18 and HSDNI on 11 seats.
If there is no name in the voter list, will you be able to cast your vote?
On the day of polling, the biggest problem is faced by those people who want to vote, but their name is not there in the voter list. Many times when before the voter casts his vote, someone else goes away after voting in his name. Now if your name is not in the voter list then you cannot vote under any circumstances. According to the rules of the Election Commission, no such person is allowed to vote, whose name is not in the voter list. If such people try to cast their vote forcefully, then legal action will be taken against them.
Someone else voted in your place?
There is a provision for tender vote in the rules of the Election Commission. Under this rule, on reaching the polling station, if you come to know that someone has already cast your vote, then you can challenge it through tender vote. In such a situation, you have to complain to the presiding officer present at the polling station. After this, the officer will do a complete investigation of the documents related to you. During the investigation, if your claim turns out to be correct, then the presiding officer can get your tender vote cast through ballot paper. If your claim turns out to be false, you can be handed over to the police on charges of forgery.
