Shillong. A day before the swearing-in ceremony of Conrad Sangma, the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) have extended their support to the National People’s Party (NPP) to form the government in the state. UDP chairman Metbah Lyngdoh confirmed this on Sunday.
“We (UDP and PDF) have given our support to the NPP,” Lyngdoh said. After getting the support of UDF and PDF, now the number of NPP has increased to 45.

The NPP emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya by winning 26 out of 59 seats. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got only two seats. The NPP entered into an alliance with the BJP after the elections. The UDP won 11 seats in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly elections, while the PDF won two.
Sangma will take oath as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya for the second consecutive term on March 7. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Raj Bhavan. During this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are also expected to attend.
Sangma on Friday submitted his resignation as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya to Governor Fagu Chauhan and then staked claim to form the new government in the state.

In the recently concluded assembly elections, Congress and Trinamool Congress won five seats each. The Voice of the People party got four seats, while the Hill State People’s Democratic Party got two seats. Whereas, independent candidates won on two seats.
Meghalaya has a total of 60 assembly seats. Notably, voting in the Sohyeong constituency was postponed following the death of UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh.
