Shillong. The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has emerged as the single largest party by winning 26 seats in Meghalaya’s elections to the 59 assembly seats, declared on Thursday. The Election Commission gave this information. However, the NPP could not touch the majority mark in the 60-member assembly.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said that Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma called up Union Home Minister Amit Shah and sought his support to form a new government. Whereas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President J.P. The BJP, which fielded star campaigners including Nadda and Shah, managed to win only two seats in the state.

The United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally of the NPP in the Sangma government, emerged as the second largest party by winning 11 seats. Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) have won five seats each. Similarly, ‘Voice of the People’s Party’ (VPP) won four seats while ‘Hill State People’s Democratic Party’ (HSPDP) won two seats. Chief Minister Konrad K. Sangma won the South Tura seat by a margin of 5,016 votes.

Sangma said, “I am thankful to the people of the state for voting for our party. We are still behind in numbers and waiting for the final result. After that we will decide on the way forward.”

Party spokesperson Ampareen Lyngdoh said the ruling party would have to seek support from others to return to power. The counting of votes began at 8 am in Meghalaya amid tight security. The counting of votes is taking place at 13 centres. Meghalaya has 60 assembly seats, but due to the death of a candidate in the Sohyeong seat, the election to this seat was postponed. (agency)
