Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi going out after meeting in PMO office.
PM Modi held a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for the new CBI director on Monday. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna also attended the Lok Sabha.
The current CBI director Praveen Sood will retire on 25 May. Sood is a 1986 batch IPS officer of Karnataka cadre. He held the post of CBI Chief on 25 May 2023. The tenure of the CBI director is only two years old.
The current director Praveen Sood is from Himachal, IPS became at the age of 22
Praveen Sood hails from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. His father Om Prakash Sood was a clerk in the Delhi government, while mother Kamlesh Sood was a teacher of Delhi’s government school. Sood was schooling from a government school in Delhi. He then conducted an BB Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi.
In 1986, he became IPS at the age of 22. He found the Karnataka cadre. During the service, he completed his MBA in Public Police Management from IIM Bengaluru. In the early stages of the police service, he was SP in Bellary and Raichur. Apart from this, he was also DCP in Bengaluru and Mysuru.
Sood received a gold medal from the CM in 1996. Apart from this, the police medal was given by the President in 2002 and the President for Special Service in 2011. In June 2020, Praveen Sood was made DGP of Karnataka.
CBI director’s selection process The name is finalized in the meeting of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for the selection of CBI Director. After this, after getting instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Department of Personal and Training (DOPT) issues the order.
Why is there a tenure of two years According to the Supreme Court’s instructions in 2019, senior officers whose retirement has been left less than six months. No such officer can be considered for the post of CBI Director.
The court also said that the director’s term cannot be less than 2 years and they can be transferred only with the consent of the Appointments Committee. The Central Vigilance Commission Act 2003 fixed the term of CBI Director 2 years.
