Maruti Suzuki sales pick up speed in January, strong response to compact segment

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki reported a growth of 14.29 per cent in passenger vehicle sales at 1,47,348 units in January. In the same month last year, the company had sold 1,28,924 units. The company said that the production of vehicles was marginally affected due to the shortage of electronics components. The company is taking measures to deal with this difficulty.

The new Brezza and Grand Vitara have helped in increasing the sales for the company. Maruti is also launching two new SUVs in this segment, the Fronx and the Jimny. These were recently introduced by the company at the Auto Expo.

The company is facing difficulties due to shortage in the supply of semiconductors. This has had a big impact on the production of the company. In the third quarter of the current financial year, the pending orders with the company have increased to about 3.63 lakh units. Maruti said in an analyst call that lack of clarity on electronic components is a challenge in planning production. This is affecting the production volume of the company. Maruti Suzuki’s supply chain, engineering, production and sales teams are working to extract maximum production volumes from the available semiconductors.

Semiconductor supplies have improved in Q3 as compared to Q2. However, the company sold around 46,000 units in the December quarter due to semiconductor shortages. Apart from this, the company can produce about 7.5 lakh units at the Gujarat plant. The company says that the demand is increasing and it can achieve higher growth than the industry. Maruti’s production declined by 17.96 percent to 1,24,722 units in December. It was 1,52,029 units in the same month last year.
