Many films had to face censorship during the Emergency from ‘Asthe’ to ‘Sterilization’

During the 21 months of the Emergency, the government implemented rigorous censorship on art and cinema. During this time, many such films had to face censorship about their content, which were completed or were being made. Here is a list of prominent films that were banned during the Emergency, which were banned or who faced sensorship:

1) The storm is believed to be inspired by the life of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Gulzar’s 1975 film was banned shortly after its release. Although the filmmakers said that this is a fictional story, but it was difficult to ignore the similarities between Aarti Devi and Indira Gandhi, the main character played by Suchitra Sen, especially white stripes in her hair. The ban was lifted from the film after the Emergency ended.

2) The ‘Negative’ of the film was destroyed by the filmmaker Amrit Nahata, the filmmaker of Kissa Kursi, while satirizing the political scenario and its print was the then Information and Broadcasting Minister V.C. Shukla seized, who was close to Indira Gandhi’s younger son Sanjay Gandhi. The main character of the film was based on Gangaram Sanjay Gandhi and also featured Shabana Azmi, Raj Babbar, Raj Kiran and Utpal Dutt. Nahata rebuilt the film and released it in 1978. However, this version of the film also faced censorship.

3) Directed by the movement article Tandon, the film was related to the Quit India Movement of 1942. It revolves around an Indian teacher, who starts rebellion against the British colonial government in his hometown. Starring Rakesh Pandey and Neetu Singh, the film faced censorship during the Emergency.

4) This Kannada film based on Chanda Marutha P Lankesh’s favorite play “Kranti Bantu Kranti” was made just before the Emergency. It was directed by Pattabhi Ram Reddy and starred by his wife Snehlata Reddy. Snehlata was put in jail and died five days after his release on parole.

5) Directed by sterilization IS Johar, the film was satirized on the forced sterilization campaign conducted during the Emergency. The film featured ‘duplicate’ (duplicate ‘(duplicate’ (duplicate ‘of that time in the film Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Manoj Kumar and Rajesh Khanna. The film was banned due to its controversial subject, but it was released in 1978 after changing the political atmosphere.

6) In the first documentary created by Anand Patwardhan, the waves of the revolution were talked about the beginning of the JP movement in Bihar and how it became a national movement before the Emergency came into force in 1975. When Anand made this film in 1975, he was only 25 years old and showed the mass movement and civil unrest when the mainstream media was under the increasing pressure of the government. It was widely spread during the Emergency.
