West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday questioned the new voter list amendment guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) before this year’s assembly elections in Bihar. He also feared that these new guidelines may be another step towards the implementation of the National Register (NRC). He further claimed that although these new guidelines have been released before the Bihar assembly elections, the main goal of these new guidelines is West Bengal, where important assembly elections are also to be held next year.

The Chief Minister especially questioned the new guidelines in which it is mandatory for those who are born before 1 July 1987 to submit the birth place and date documents for those born before 1 July 1987 and the documents of parents are compulsory for those born after 1 July 1987. Alleging that the Election Commission “is acting like the BJP’s puppet”, Banerjee asked if this step was an attempt to implement NRC.
