Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni resigned after a dispute between Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi and Kinnar Akhara founder Rishi Ajay Das from the post of Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhara at Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj recently. The dispute happened due to Mamta as he gave him the title of Mahamandaleshwar. Mamta said that she left the world of showbiz to start her spiritual journey and took a new name – Mr. Yamai Mamta Nandagiri. She became Mahamandaleshwar (a respected spiritual leader) during the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on 24 January. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev criticized the appointment of the actor as Mahamandaleshwar because he said that no one can achieve saintliness in a day.Baba Ramdev told the media portal“The great Kumbh festival of Sanatan, where our roots are connected, is a grand festival. It is a sacred festival. Some people add vulgarity, intoxication and inappropriate behavior in the name of Kumbh – this is not the right essence of Mahakumbh.
Rishi Ajay Das issued a press release on January 30, 2025 and said, “As the founder of Kinnar Akhara, I am free from the post of Acharya Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhara, Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi from the post of Acharya Mahamandaleshwar. He has been appointed to promote religious activities and uplift the transgender community.

The dispute revolves around an agreement made by Lakshmi in 2019 with Juna Akhara, which Ajay Das claims that it was allegedly made without his approval. He further alleged that the contract between the two akhadas is legally invalid due to his consent and lack of signature. In addition, Ajay Das accused Lakshmi of weakening the principles of Kinnar Akhara by allowing Mamta to play the prestigious role of Mahamandaleshwar despite being involved in criminal activities.
Mamta, who was known for her roles in popular Bollywood films of the 1990s, was away from the limelight in the early 2000s.However, she returned to India and was awarded the post of Mahamandaleshwar by Lakshmi, a task that has now come under a tight investigation.
