West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday claimed that the recent floods in North Bengal were caused by water released from Bhutan. Banerjee also demanded compensation from the Himalayan state for the damage and loss of life and property caused by the floods. Banerjee was quoted as saying in a brief address at a government event that we have suffered losses due to the water coming from Bhutan… We want them to compensate us. He said the state government has to make arrangements for all relief and rehabilitation and claimed that the Center does not pay for it.

According to the Chief Minister, his government has been demanding for a long time the formation of an India-Bhutan River Commission in which West Bengal should also be made a member. Banerjee said a meeting on the issue is likely to be held on October 16 and the state will send an official as its representative.
