Majhi spoke to father of gang rape victim in West Bengal, assured support

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spoke over phone to the father of a medical student who was ‘gang raped’ in Durgapur, West Bengal and assured him of all possible assistance from the state government.

A medical student from Odisha was allegedly raped by unidentified people in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district. The incident took place outside the private medical college campus in Durgapur on Friday night when the second year student had gone out to have dinner with a friend.

West Bengal Police arrested three people in this case on Sunday. Majhi spoke to the victim’s father present in Durgapur on Saturday night. Majhi was quoted as saying in a release from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), “I am extremely saddened to know about your daughter’s death. I can understand the mental condition of a father whose daughter has been gang raped. The state government is completely with you in this difficult time.

The Chief Minister said that the state government is currently focusing on ensuring that the victim recovers soon and is able to lead a normal life. Majhi told the victim’s father that he has requested West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to give strictest punishment to the culprits.

He said a senior official from Odisha is in touch with the West Bengal government and is providing all necessary legal assistance. He has directed the Balasore District Superintendent of Police to remain in touch with the Durgapur Police and provide necessary assistance.

Majhi assured to provide all kinds of assistance to the victim’s father. The victim’s father thanked the Chief Minister for his sympathy and assistance.

Earlier on Saturday, Majhi, through a social media post, had urged Banerjee to quickly arrest the accused and ensure strict punishment for them.
