Justice BR Gawai will be the 52nd Chief Justice of India after CJI Justice Sanjeev Khanna.
Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna has said that he will not take any official post after retirement, but he will continue his work in the field of law. Justice Khanna, who was promoted to the Supreme Court on 18 January 2019, was appointed CJI on 11 November 2024. His last working day was in the Supreme Court as CJI on Tuesday.
In his Farewell Speech, CJI Khanna said that lack of truth in the legal profession bothers him. He also said that the role of a judge is not to dominate the court, but does not even surrender.

CJI Khanna said- I will play third innings, but staying in the profession of law
CJI met reporters after the Ceremonial Bench. He said, I will not take any post after retirement. Perhaps I will do something in the field of law. CJI said that I will play the third innings and do something related to the law. Regarding the break on his 42 -year career as a lawyer and judge, CJI Khanna said that he was eager to get rid of the judge inside himself. And feeling retirement as the beginning of a new life.
Justice BR Gawai will be the next CJI
CJI Sanjeev Khanna officially recommended the name of Justice BR Gawai as his successor. His name was sent to the Union Law Ministry for approval. Along with this, Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai will be the 52nd Chief Justice of India. The term of the current CJI Sanjeev Khanna ended on 13 May. On 14 May, President Draupadi Murmu will administer the oath to Justice Gavai.
During the Farewell, Justice Sanjeev Khanna’s style of Justice Gawai is such that I have always praised. They are sociable. No mess, no complexity, they remain simple. Their talent comes without showing, they are what they are. The court will be in better hands.
