Military and political life
Muhammadu Buhari first came to power in 1983 after a military coup. However, his tenure as a military chief was short -lived, as he was overthrown after less than 20 months. Decades later, after several unsuccessful efforts, he was elected President of Nigeria in 2015 and became the first opposition candidate to win the presidential election in the country. During his election campaign, Buhari promised to eliminate widespread corruption and deal with the deteriorating security situation, including Boko Haram’s violent rebellion in the Northeast.
