Railway’s source of income
In 2019-20, when there were no restrictions, the Railways earned Rs 1313 crore through dynamic fares, Rs 1669 crore on Tatkal tickets and Rs 603 crore on premium tatkal tickets. These figures of the railways have come to the fore after the Parliamentary Standing Committee termed the tatkal ticket charge as unfair and said that it puts a burden on the passengers who are financially weak and suddenly they have to travel.
How much is charged Tatkal Charge
Tatkal ticket charge is levied equal to 10 per cent of the basic fare of the second class fare of the train. So for other categories, 30% of the basic fare is charged. The premium Tatkal version was introduced in select trains in 2014. 50% of Tatkal tickets are sold under the dynamic fare system. The parliamentary committee had also raised questions on dynamic pricing.
