Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday condemned the incident in which a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at Supreme Court Chief Justice of India BR Gavai in his courtroom. Such people should be condemned by all our lawyers and bar associations… Those who are still violating the fundamental rights of people in the name of Manusmriti and Sanatan Dharma should be educated.

Kharge said that those who try to spread unnecessary tension in the society and disturb peace should be educated and held accountable. In an unprecedented and shocking incident, an elderly lawyer in the Supreme Court on Monday tried to throw a shoe towards Gavai in his court room. Speaking to reporters, he said that the government should take action against the person who tried to insult the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court in the name of religion and on the basis of ideology that breaks the society.

He said, “I am sad that the reaction from lawyers, governments, political parties and the public after this incident has not been widespread, but some progressive states, progressive thinking lawyers and leaders of political parties have condemned it.” Kharge also condemned the lynching of a man from the Valmiki community in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli district by a mob, saying it shows the extent to which law and order has deteriorated in Uttar Pradesh.
